The following project is a visualization designed to give insights on the political leanings of demographic groups by state and the degree of their influence per state relative to the rest of the nation.
Exit polls are designed to capture how demographic groups voted and to gauge their stance on issues important to the election. In 2003 the National Election Pool was formed and is a consortium of the national news networks: ABC, the Associated Press, CBS, CNN, FOX News and NBC. The news networks establish committees that are responsible for formulating the questionnaires and determine the target precincts. The committees pass this information to the NEP, and it handles the logistics of conducting the polls. This includes hiring and training of pollsters, surviving voters, and analyzing the results and adjusting them when necessary. Prior to its founding, each news company was responsible for conducting its own polls.
The map above was designed to visualize how certain demographic groups voted and their distribution of Electoral College Votes. The map has two visualization modes:
- Electoral Votes: Colors the states based on which party has the majority vote. The darker the color the larger the margin of victory.
- Group Influence: Colors the states based on percentage of the overall vote the demographic group carried in that state relative to the other states. The darker the color the larger the turnout of that group.
The data was pulled from CNN exit poll site on 11-13-16.
